Job summary

ALTEN in Belfast is seeking a Mechanical Draftsperson to ensure high standards of engineering drawing quality across defence projects. You will maintain drawing standards, review documentation, and ensure outputs meet BS 8888 and customer requirements, collaborating with design engineers.

You should have 2+ years’ experience, a relevant engineering degree, GD&T knowledge, 3D CAD skills, and openness to obtain SC clearance.

Qualifications

• Experience producing and reviewing mechanical engineering drawings.
• Strong knowledge of BS 8888 drawing standards and drafting best practices.
• Practical understanding of GD&T principles.
• Experience with 3D CAD systems and generating compliant 2D drawings.
• Knowledge of engineering documentation, quality assurance, and document control processes.
• Ability to identify and resolve drawing-related issues and inaccuracies.
• High attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality standards.
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to provide constructive technical feedback.
• Confidence working with design engineers and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain best practice guidelines for mechanical drawings and related engineering documentation.
• Ensure all drawings comply with BS 8888 standards, including dimensioning, tolerancing, drawing layout, and drafting conventions.
• Review technical drawings to confirm compliance with internal quality requirements and customer specifications.
• Validate drawing accuracy, clarity, dimensioning strategies, and tolerancing approaches.
• Review GD&T callouts, datums, feature control frames, and geometric tolerances for technical correctness.
• Ensure document control information, revision status, title blocks, and traceability requirements are maintained.
• Provide technical guidance on GD&T application and drawing standard compliance.
• Support the creation and maintenance of high-quality 2D drawings and CAD-generated outputs.
