Mechanical Design Lead for Refurbishments in Live Buildings

Job summary

OCS UK & Ireland is seeking an MEP Technical Services Manager – Mechanical Design to lead refurbishment and plant replacement projects across occupied buildings. You will develop practical engineering solutions, review calculations, specify equipment, and coordinate with electrical, controls and public health teams.

You will travel across the London–Bristol corridor, lead design workshops, and support bids through technical specifications and supplier reviews.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent in Mechanical/Building Services Engineering.
• Extensive mechanical building services design in consultancy or contractor environments.
• Experience producing or checking mechanical calculations and equipment selections.
• Experience designing/upgrading plant within existing buildings.
• Strong knowledge of heating, cooling, ventilation and controls.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design development for building services upgrades and plant replacements.
• Undertake or review site surveys to assess existing systems and constraints.
• Prepare and challenge drawings, calculations, specifications and equipment schedules.
• Check heating/cooling loads, ventilation rates, duct/pipe sizing and pump duties.
• Specify chillers, boilers, heat pumps and air handling units.
• Assess integration with existing pipes, electrical, and BMS controls.
• Plan temporary services, shutdowns and phased installation in occupied buildings.
• Lead design meetings with consultants, contractors and clients.
• Resolve technical queries and coordinate with electrical/public health/architectural teams.
• Support bids with design assessments and supplier reviews.
• Identify risks and value engineering opportunities while maintaining quality.
• Ensure compliance with UK Building Regulations and CIBSE guidance.
• Review commissioning strategies and handover documentation.
• Promote energy efficiency and whole-life value in design.
