Job summary

Dorchester Search & Selection is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a UK-based defence/aerospace engineering team. You will develop mechanical components for radar system hardware, ensure environmental resilience, and drive manufacturability from concept to production handover.

The role requires 5 years of mechanical engineering experience, HND in Mechanical Engineering, and strong CAD and DFMA skills.

Qualifications

• 5 Years’ experience in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• HND in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
• Proficient in 2D/3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, or similar).
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles including tolerance analysis, material selection, and design for manufacture/assembly (DFM/DFA).
• Experience with environmental qualification standards and ruggedised electronic packaging.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills with a proactive and problem-solving mindset, a can-do attitude.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies.
• Generate detailed 2D and 3D CAD models and engineering drawings in accordance with industry and company standards.
• Generate and maintain Engineering and manufacturing Bills of Materials (BoM’s).
• Conduct structural, and vibration analyses to ensure robustness and compliance with environmental standards (e.g., MIL-STD-810, DEF STAN).
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical, RF, and systems engineering to deliver integrated solutions.
• Work closely with manufacturing and suppliers to ensure designs are cost-effective, producible and meet quality standards.
• Support prototyping, testing, and validation activities including design iterations based on test results.
• Maintain configuration control and contribute to design reviews, DFMEAs, and project documentation.
