Job summary

Pertemps Bond is seeking an experienced Mechanical Assembly Fitter for a Bedford-based role with a leading pump manufacturer.

You will assemble and test pump systems, read engineering drawings, and work to production schedules while maintaining safety and quality standards in a hands-on workshop environment.

Qualifications

• Several years' experience as Mechanical Fitter/Assembly Fitter.
• Experience in medium to heavy engineering/manufacturing environment.
• Proven ability to meet production schedules and deadlines.
• Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
• Experience completing manufacturing, inspection and quality documentation.

Responsibilities

• Assemble mechanical and electrical components from drawings, BOMs and work instructions to produce pump assemblies.
• Carry out stripping, preparation, termination and testing of electrical cables.
• Perform mechanical fitting and assembly operations using hand, power and pneumatic tools.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings and work instructions.
• Complete dimensional checks and quality documentation.
• Operate overhead cranes and forklift trucks to move large components safely.
• Load and unload vehicles and meet production schedules.

Mechanical Assembly Fitter

About the Role

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Assembly Fitter to join a leading manufacturer of pumps used within the land drainage, flood defence and sewage industries. Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will be part of a skilled workshop team responsible for the assembly and testing of high-quality pump systems, ensuring customer delivery requirements are met. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong mechanical background who enjoys working in a hands‑on engineering environment and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Assemble mechanical and electrical components from engineering drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs) and work instructions to produce completed pump assemblies.
• Carry out stripping, preparation, termination and continuity testing of electrical cables.
• Perform mechanical fitting and assembly operations using hand, power and pneumatic tools.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, checklists and visual work instructions.
• Complete dimensional checks, quality inspections and associated production documentation accurately.
• Operate overhead cranes and forklift trucks to move large and heavy components safely around the workshop.
• Load and unload vehicles as required.
• Work to production schedules and delivery deadlines.
• Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.
• Ensure all tasks are completed in accordance with Health, Safety, Environmental and Welfare procedures.
• Support continuous improvement activities and other operational projects as required.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Experience & Qualifications

• Several years' experience in a Mechanical Fitter, Assembly Fitter or similar engineering role.
• Experience within a medium to heavy engineering or manufacturing environment.
• Proven ability to work to production schedules and deadlines.
• Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
• Experience completing manufacturing, inspection and quality documentation.
• Good standard of education.
• Overhead Crane licence/certification desirable (training can be provided).
• Forklift Truck licence/certification desirable (training can be provided).
• Good understanding of Health & Safety requirements within a manufacturing environment.
