Job summary

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Band 6 Midwife to lead and champion the Tobacco Dependency Programme within maternity services. You will drive CO screening uptake, support women who smoke, and deliver VBA training across teams.

You will work across Royal Derby Hospital and Queen's Hospital Burton, contributing to audits, education, and service development. The role supports public health aims and reducing health inequalities in pregnancy.

Qualifications

• First level Degree or equivalent.
• Current NMC Registered Midwife.
• Experience in Smoking cessation or Tobacco Dependency in Pregnancy preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support delivery of the maternity Tobacco Dependency Programme across hospital and community settings.
• Promote routine Carbon Monoxide (CO) screening and opt-out referral pathways.
• Provide specialist support to pregnant women who smoke and those requiring enhanced intervention.
• Deliver training and education programmes for maternity staff, including VBA training.
• Work collaboratively with Tobacco Dependency Advisors, community services, local authorities and external stakeholders.
• Monitor compliance with national standards and contribute to audit, quality improvement and service evaluation.
• Support the development of smoke-free homes through engagement with partners and families.
• Act as a clinical champion and role model, promoting evidence-based practice and compassionate, non-judgemental care.
