The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is seeking an experienced registered midwife to join as a Maternity Regulation Liaison. You will connect regulatory intelligence with practice, supporting the midwifery strategy and public protection across the UK.
You will lead the development of regulatory learning, triangulating fitness to practise, adjudications, education quality, research and stakeholder feedback to drive improvements in education, practice, guidance and policy.
Our vision is for safe and effective nursing and midwifery practice across the four countries of the UK – regulated and supported by the NMC – a fit for the future organisation, with fairness and equity at the heart of everything we do.
Our role is to protect the public and maintain confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions. As the largest independent regulator in Europe of more than 860,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have a crucial role in making this a reality.
We do this by setting and promoting high education and professional standards for all future and registered nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England.
We also ensure every nurse, midwife and nursing associate on our Register meets clear standards of conduct and practice which protects the public and the reputation of our professions.
We have a duty to investigate concerns and to take steps to protect the public in the relatively rare instances where we need to limit or restrict a nurse, midwife or nursing associate's right to practise.
We are building a new NMC with integrity, fairness, respect, equity and effectiveness at its core.
We are determined to improve and modernise our culture and ways of working. This will ensure that the public and professionals feel confident in our work.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council regulates nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England. Our role is to protect the public by maintaining professional standards and taking action when concerns are raised about someone’s fitness to practise.
At a time of sustained scrutiny and change across maternity services, we are strengthening how professional expertise and regulatory intelligence inform our work. We are looking for an experienced registered midwife to join us as our Maternity Regulation Liaison.
This is an opportunity to connect information from across the regulatory landscape and help turn it into learning and improvement. Acting as a bridge between Professional Practice and Professional Regulation, you will bring together external insight and internal regulatory information to support the NMC's midwifery strategy and strengthen public protection.
Reporting to the Assistant Director for Midwifery, you will provide current professional midwifery and regulatory expertise to operational teams, senior leaders, colleagues and decision-makers across the NMC.
You will lead the development of regulatory intelligence and learning across maternity services. This will involve triangulating insight from fitness to practise, adjudications, education quality assurance, revalidation, research, stakeholder feedback and the wider maternity and neonatal landscape. You will help colleagues interpret what this information means, identify risk and translate learning into improvements in education, professional practice, guidance and regulatory activity.
You will also contribute specialist midwifery input to regulatory policy, standards, guidance, communications and engagement, helping ensure that our work is professionally informed, fair, proportionate and focused on public protection.
You must be a registered midwife with credible professional expertise and a current understanding of midwifery practice, professional standards and the UK health and care environment.
You will bring:
Knowledge of UK regulatory legislation and the NMC's legislation, rules and standards would be helpful. Experience of developing or evaluating policy, guidance, standards or regulatory tools—and of engaging government bodies, providers, education institutions, professional bodies or networks across the UK—would also be valuable. Experience as an expert witness would be welcome.
You do not need to arrive knowing every aspect of the NMC's work. What matters is that you combine professional credibility and analytical curiosity with sound judgement, collaborative instincts and a clear commitment to fairness and public protection.
This role offers a distinctive opportunity to shape how the NMC understands and responds to intelligence about maternity services. Your work will help connect information that might otherwise remain separate, strengthen organisational learning and ensure that regulatory insight leads to practical improvements for women, babies, families, professionals and the public.
Please note that this role requires you to review and work with sensitive and distressing material relating to fitness to practice cases and you will be given the appropriate support to deal with this material.
