Job summary

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust in Portsmouth is seeking a Senior Maternity Governance Matron (Band 8a) to provide professional leadership for maternity governance, quality, risk and patient safety. The role ensures robust assurance systems and drives sustainable improvement across maternity services in partnership with Isle of Wight colleagues.

You will lead on clinical governance, complaints handling and learning, align with national standards, and present high‑quality governance

Qualifications

• Professional clinical knowledge in governance, risk management and quality improvement.
• Experience engaging and influencing clinicians at all levels within the Trust.
• Senior leadership experience in a complex organisation.
• Experience of governance on a Trust/Division wide basis.
• Experience working across multi-professional boundaries to enhance patient experience.
• Calm, inclusive and flexible leadership style.
• Commitment to learning culture and patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior leadership and oversight of maternity governance, risk, quality and patient safety systems, supporting effective assurance and escalation.
• Oversee the review and management of patient safety incidents, identifying themes and driving improvements.
• Ensure learning from incidents, complaints and audits translates into measurable improvements.
• Ensure assurance against local and national maternity standards and regulatory requirements.
• Lead preparation and presentation of governance and safety reports to committees.
• Strengthen audit, action planning and monitoring with demonstrable impact.
• Promote openness, learning and psychological safety; support a just culture.
• Ensure feedback from women, birthing people and families informs governance and improvements.
• Collaborate across boundaries to strengthen maternity and neonatal safety.
