Job summary

Heavy Haul Rail Ltd in Leeds is seeking an experienced Materials Controller to support the Stores team at the Leeds VMF. You will manage goods inwards, stock, and requisitions, preparing materials for overhaul and coordinating loading/unloading of vehicles.

The role requires at least 2 years in a Materials Controller or Logistics Coordinator role, strong planning and IT skills, and a willingness to work 24/7 shift patterns.

Qualifications

  • at least 2 years’ experience in a Materials Controller/Logistics Coordinator role.
  • knowledge of materials control, purchase order processing and logistics.
  • strong planning, organisational and communication skills.
  • proven ability to meet tight deadlines and work with minimal supervision.
  • experience with budgets and cost control is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Manage goods inwards, store materials, raise requisitions, and prepare material for overhaul.
  • Stock counting, issuing materials, raising and expediting orders.
  • Monitor material usage on site and liaise with Stores Manager and production teams.
  • Maintain housekeeping to improve efficiency and safety.
  • Adhere to internal procedures and ensure safe working practices.

Materials Controller – Leeds Vehicle Maintenance Facility

Heavy Haul Rail Ltd seeks an experienced Materials Controller to support the day‑to‑day running of the Stores team at Leeds VMF. The role reports to the Stores Manager and focuses on effective goods handling, logistics, and inventory accuracy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Managing goods inwards, storing materials correctly, raising requisitions, preparing material for overhaul, and loading/unloading vehicles.
  • Stock counting, issuing of material, raising orders, and expediting orders.
  • Monitoring utilisation of materials on site.
  • Ensuring housekeeping is maintained to the highest standard to improve efficiency and safety.
  • Liaising with the Stores Manager and production teams across Heavy Haul sites as required.
  • Adhering to internal procedures.
Qualifications
  • Commitment to safe working practices.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of materials control, purchase order processing and logistics.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a Materials Controller/Logistics Coordinator role.
  • Understanding of material procurement/purchasing processes.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Enthusiasm, self‑starter attitude and ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Effective communication at all levels.
  • Excellent computer skills, proficiency with Microsoft software packages.
  • Knowledge of budgets and ability to work within them.
  • Counterbalance forklift qualification essential; telehandler or overhead crane experience an advantage.
  • Flexible approach to working hours – Leeds VMF operates 24/7.
