Job summary

Birmingham City Council is seeking an Operations Manager to lead the Markets Service, overseeing Rag, Indoor and Open Markets across multiple locations. The role is permanent, 36.5 hours per week, Grade 6 with a salary band of £56,293 to £66,690.

You will manage a small markets team, drive change, oversee budget monitoring, procurement, performance metrics and stakeholder engagement to sustain income generation and excellent customer experience in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Educated to Degree Level.
• Hold Diploma in Markets Management or be willing to achieve this.
• Experience delivering services in complex high pressure environments.
• Proven management experience in a service organisation of comparable scope.
• Proven record of managing significant budgets and contracts.
• Self-motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Experience delivering strategic objectives through service planning.
• Strong time management and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day operational management of Rag, Indoor and Open Markets.
• Manage and develop market teams, oversee staff performance and workforce planning.
• Drive operational improvements and business change to enhance income generation and customer experience.
• Support financial management including budget monitoring and forecasting.
• Manage procurement activities, contracts and supplier relationships.
• Develop relationships with traders and stakeholders to promote market growth.
• Lead development and delivery of market strategies and performance measures.
