Job description

Hanningfield are currently recruiting for a machinist to join our family business.

We are a Southend-based machinery manufacturer looking for an experienced Manual Machinist.

Role Summary:

The Machinist role is responsible for operating machinery such as lathes and mills which are manual controlled to produce stainless steel, Delrin, PTFE etc. machined parts. You will be responsible for setting up the manual turning and milling machines and adjusting where needed. You will also be required to have experience in, and be competent at using, workshop machinery.

Reporting to: Machine Shop Team Lead

Key Interactions: Directors, Line Managers, Other Team Leaders, Other Staff Members.

Key Responsibilities
Tool setting and operating:
  • Responsible for operating lathes and milling machines to produce stainless steel, Delrin, PTFE etc. machined parts to drawings specifications;
  • Operation, setting and calibration of manual machines for milling and turning, to facilitate the manufacture of components as required.
  • Experience in setting tolerance levels and cutting speeds.
Machining and preparation of materials:
  • Experience in raw material preparation by sawing stainless steel billets to size, clearing of swarf and reading it for machining.
  • Experience in bench fitting and marking out material before milling and turning. Drilling, sawing and filing.
  • Monitor machine while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature and identify issues.
  • Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job.
Engineering Drawings:
  • Reading engineering drawings, understanding specifications and other written instructions or procedures to accurately machine parts at the correct specification required by customers.
  • Translates the requirements of detailed part drawings into measurements for production.
Machinery:
  • Experience in using workshop machinery such as band saws, bench grinders, manual mills/lathes.
Business Processes:
  • Regular liaison with the Machine Shop Team Lead or in absence with Production Manager to ensure deadlines are met and priorities assigned.
HSQE:
  • Perform quality work checks for in process machined items to ensure it is up to the standard that Hanningfield Process Systems expect.
  • Clean and maintain the equipment, machinery and tools as well as all the machining areas.
  • Ensure that adequate PPE is worn.
  • Promote a safe working environment by adhering to health and safety regulations and promoting best practices.
Key Qualifications
Knowledge:
  • Excellent knowledge of manual turning and milling techniques of stainless steel and various other materials like Delrin, PTFE etc.
  • Knowledge of manual turning and milling machinery.
Skills:
  • Awareness of ISO 9000 Standard (e.g. work procedures, traceability of materials) and Health and Safety good practice rules in a manufacturing environment. Safety conscious as working with machinery.
  • Possess strong attention to detail.
  • Possess good manual dexterity.
  • Be effective at working to tight deadlines at times.
  • Willing to take instruction and be trained to achieve a high standard of machining in line with expectations.
  • Possess good Literacy and Numeracy skills as well as the ability to understand technical drawings.
Experience:
  • Previous minimum of 3+ years’ experience in the requirements of the manual machinist role.
  • Experience in CNC programming and setting of 5-axis turning machines and ideally CNC milling machines.
  • Experience with SolidCAM software for CNC will be ideal.
Qualifications:
  • A recognised Apprenticeship will be preferred.
  • Proficiency in Maths and English is a must.
  • Internal tests may be required for specific jobs.

  • Physical ability to perform tasks and use heavy machinery and power tools.
  • Be an effective and motivated team player, able to work both closely with others and in a self-guided capacity. Willingness to learn and “can do” attitude.
  • Well organised.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Be reliable with good timekeeping.
  • Strong work ethic and a sense of urgency but also the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Have a flexible approach and positive attitude to working in a fast-changing environment.
