Job summary

Balfour Beatty Rail is seeking an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead a team of Quantity Surveyors on a major framework programme. You will provide commercial leadership and oversee close-outs across schemes, working with regional teams to deliver exceptional project outcomes.

You will drive profitability by developing commercial strategies, maintain cost reporting, forecast costs to completion and ensure timely variations and valuations. Strong leadership and CSCS access a must.

About the role

Balfour Beatty Rail has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead a team of Quantity Surveyors on a major framework programme. The role will also provide commercial leadership and oversight for the successful close-out of several schemes across the region, working closely with smaller commercial teams to deliver excellent project outcomes.

What you'll be doing

Below are some of the responsibilities of the Managing Quantity Surveyor;

Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with standard company HSE procedures and work instructions

Accountable for the activities of directly reporting quantity surveying staff, providing advice and guidance to other members of the team and to Project Directors/Managers, as required

In conjunction with the relevant Project Management team member(s), be accountable for the profitability of the project(s), and develop an appropriate commercial strategy for the project(s) to ensure delivery of required margins

Contribute to the management and maintenance of a contract cost reporting system, ensuring all financial information is managed and up-to-date and tracked with budget/tender allowances, commitments and deviations highlighted and managed

With other members of the team, produce and provide accurate forecasts of project cost to completion and final value

Continually monitor projected costs to completion in line with budget

Ensure that necessary interface information between customer, subcontractors and other departments is provided in a timely manner

Pro-actively monitor cash flow and valuation plan, ensuring applications are made correctly and in a timely manner

Ensure contract variations are identified, valued and turned into agreed variation orders with the customer in a timely manner

Manage the subcontract tender process, including the selection of sub-contractors and provision of all relevant contract and schedule documentation

Who we're looking for

This is a management position for an individual with the business acumen to develop commercial opportunity on projects within the business stream to achieve and exceed profitability targets.

Proven experience in the ability to lead, influence and communicate with others and, in particular, create successful commercial teams at all levels is required.

Substantial previous experience in quantity surveying within a relevant business environment and a valid CSCS card are required.

Membership of a relevant professional body and/or relevant professional qualification is desirable, such as RICS/CIOB/RIBA/ICE/ CIBSE.

The ability to operate successfully in a commercial environment and previous experience of managing project commercial performance is necessary.

Commercial awareness is required to assess margin, risk and cash flow.

Demonstrates a passion and excitement for their work. Tackles problems head-on and works to resolve them without delay.

Willing to go the extra mile to exceed expectations.

Continually searches for ways to add value and take performance to the next level.
