Job summary

Thames Water is looking for an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead a busy team of QS professionals within the AMP8 programme. The role focuses on delivering value and life’s essential services to customers while coordinating with stakeholders.

The base location is Reading with hybrid working. You will oversee contract commercial management and drive performance, with emphasis on leadership, negotiation, and risk management.

Qualifications

• Degree in Quantity Surveying (or equivalent) is required.
• Background in civil engineering sector (transportation, nuclear, utilities or similar).
• Chartered or detailed knowledge of the RICS would be desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of up to 40 Quantity Surveyors across levels.
• Oversee a contractor programme value of up to £400m per annum in AMP8.
• Manage commercial aspects of contracts and supplier negotiations to balance risk and resilience.

What you’ll be doing as a Managing Quantity Surveyor

We are looking for a talented Managing Quantity Surveyor who has the skills and necessary experience to challenge, engage, influence and drive change.

This is an integral and exciting opportunity lead a dedicated and enthusiastic team of Quantity Surveyors essential to the successful delivery of Major Projects and Programmes in AMP8 at Thames Water. You will oversee a contractor programme value of up to £400m per annum in AMP8, playing a vital role in ensure we deliver value and life’s essential service to Customers.

Base Location: Hybrid - Reading

What you should bring to the role

To thrive in this role, the essential criteria you’ll need is:

• Hold a degree or a master’s in quantity surveying or equivalent.
• Have a background in working in the civil engineering sector, such as transportation, nuclear, utilities or similar fields.
• Be competent in line managing a team of up to 40 Quantity Surveyors of all levels and developing them to success.
• Extensive experience in commercially managing a portfolio of projects both pre and post-contract.
• Have experience in negotiating with suppliers on all commercial and contractual matters and applying judgment as to what constitutes an acceptable level of contractual risk and supply resilience.
• Have strong Communication and the ability to bring numerous stakeholders together to bring opportunities to fruition.
• Self-starter, resilient and tenacious under pressure.
• Hold a full UK Driving license and have your transport.
• You will need to be a good team player, who enjoys working as part of a busy team.
• Chartered or detailed knowledge of the RICS.
• Knowledge of water regulation (incl. OFWAT Price review methodology) would be desirable.
