Job summary

Thames Water is seeking a Project Quantity Surveyor to manage a portfolio of projects with minimal supervision, ensuring value for money and contractual compliance on schemes ranging from £25k to £200M.

Based in Reading with hybrid working, the role involves commercial assurance, tender negotiation, payment certification, change control, budget management, and stakeholder liaison.

Qualifications

  • Experience managing a portfolio of projects pre/post-contract.
  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent.
  • Desire to work toward Chartered Status.
  • Strong negotiation and dispute resolution skills.
  • Understanding of water regulation (OFWAT Price Review).
  • Excellent relationship-building and communication.
  • Mentor junior team members.
  • Valid UK driving license and own transport.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Commercial Assurance of Major Projects and Programmes contracts.
  • Challenge, negotiate and agree project tenders on portfolio.
  • Ensure timely payments in line with contracts.
  • Assess Change and Extension of Time under contracts.
  • Maintain contractual compliance and advise stakeholders on performance.
  • Support budgets and spend management for portfolio.
  • Attend monthly site meetings.
  • Data collection for contracts.
  • Audit and agree project accounts.
  • Support senior/junior QS in resolution of claims.

Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Quantity Surveyor who will be responsible for managing a portfolio of projects with minimal supervision to ensure that value for money is achieved alongside contractual compliance. You could have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects ranging in contractor value from £25k to £200M during your career at Thames Water.

What you’ll be doing as a Project Quantity Surveyor
  • Providing Commercial Assurance of Major Projects and Programmes Contracts.
  • Challenge, negotiating and agreeing Project Tenders on assigned Portfolio.
  • Ensuring that payments are made on time and in accordance with the Contract for your given portfolio of Projects.
  • Assessing the Quantum of Change and/or Extension of Time under the relevant Contracts on the assigned portfolio.
  • Ensuring that appropriate processes are in place and monitored on your Projects to ensure that Contractual Compliance is maintained and advising stakeholders if any non-performance is identified and corrective actions implemented as necessary.
  • Supporting the management and optimisation of budgets and spend on the portfolio of Projects
  • Attending monthly site meetings on-site.
  • Data Collecting the relevant Contracts on the assigned portfolio.
  • Auditing and agreeing on Project Accounts.
  • Supporting the Senior, Principal or Managing Quantity Surveyor with the resolution of Claims as necessary.
Base Location: Reading – Hybrid. Maple Lodge - Hybrid
Working Pattern or hours: 36 hours
What you should bring to the role
To thrive in this role, the essential criteria you’ll need are:
  • Have extensive experience in commercially managing a portfolio of projects, both pre and post-contract.
  • Hold a degree in Quantity Surveying of equivalent.
  • Have a desire to work towards gaining Chartered Status.
  • Be confident in negotiation and have some dispute resolution skills.
  • Understand water regulation (incl. OFWAT Price Review methodology)
  • Be excellent at building and maintaining relationships.
  • Have strong communication skills.
  • Mentor junior team members.
  • Hold a full UK Driving license and have your own transport.
