Job description

Manager, Software Development - Risk R&D, AI, Architecture & Innovation - Hybrid, Glasgow, Scotland, UK

We’re a leader in data and AI. Through our software and services, we inspire customers around the world to transform data into intelligence - and questions into answers.

If you’re looking for a dynamic, fulfilling career with flexibility and a world-class employee experience, you’ll find it here. We’re recognized around the world for our inclusive, meaningful culture and innovative technologies by organizations like Fast Company, Forbes, Newsweek and more.

About the job

Join our Risk R&D department where technology innovation, strategic architecture, and domain expertise come together to deliver industry-leading Risk solutions. As a Software Development Manager on the AI, Architecture, and Innovation team, your primary focus will be hands‑on software development and technical leadership. This role combines active participation in the design, development, testing, and delivery of software with a smaller amount of managerial and administrative responsibility.

This is not a traditional people-management position. While you will support and develop team members through coaching, mentoring, and performance management, the majority of your time will be spent working alongside the team: designing solutions, writing code, reviewing implementations, troubleshooting issues, and helping drive successful delivery of key initiatives.

As a Manager, Software Development, you will:

  • Lead development project designs and enforce technical standards.
  • Provide technical leadership to the team through code reviews, mentoring, training and managing the activities of the team.
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders (other managers, developers, user interface designers, product managers) to ensure implementation satisfies functional requirements and is consistent with established R&D standards.
  • Manage and lead project scoping and scheduling; track progress of individual tasks and alert executive management and stakeholders of concerns meeting schedules, while following established R&D standards.
  • Maintain accountability for the entire life cycle of the code including support for both internal and external consumers.
  • Contribute to product direction through collaboration with Product Management, Marketing, Sales, and others within SAS.
  • Manage all aspects of the team including teamwork, performance management, feedback, professional growth through collaboration with SAS human resources, SAS education and executive leadership.
  • Work with senior management to develop, prioritize, and assign project objectives and responsibilities to individual resources.
  • Engage with upper management in major decisions and complex issues.
  • Perform hands‑on development tasks including writing code, performing code reviews, writing and reviewing tests, monitoring test reports, designing new features, demoing new features, etc.
  • Ensure all applicable security policies and processes are followed to support the organization's secure software development goals.
  • Embrace curiosity, passion, authenticity and accountability. These are our values and influence everything we do.

Required qualifications

  • Requires a minimum of eight years of related programming or testing experience, including one year of project lead, supervisory or management experience. Eight years of professional programming or testing experience may be considered in lieu of previous management experience.
  • Bachelors degree in computer science or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of generative AI, the software development lifecycle, and at least one object-oriented language.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor or lead others, set clear goals and expectations, provide timely feedback, and build an inclusive and accountable engineering culture.
  • Proof of right to work in the UK
  • Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.

Additional competencies, knowledge and skills

  • Fostering a work environment that encourages people to act with integrity and treat each other and their ideas with respect; creating and protecting a high-trust environment by setting an example, advocating for others in the face of challenges, removing barriers to trust, and rewarding others for demonstrating behaviors that cultivate trust. Provides feedback both reinforcing and constructive regarding the behaviors of his/her managers.
  • Identifying and leveraging opportunities to accelerate results and build capability by assigning tasks and decision-making responsibilities to individuals or teams with clear boundaries, expectations, support, and follow‑up.
  • Motivating individuals toward higher levels of performance that are aligned with the organization’s vision and values.
  • Experience in leading projects to deliver high quality, scalable, performant and secure code.

  • Experience in CI/CD and DevOps using GitHub, Jenkins, Azure DevOps or similar tools.
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Experience with Agile practices.
  • Experience in multiple development languages (SAS, Python, Go, JavaScript, React)
  • Experience of container technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with the SAS Viya platform.
  • Knowledge of the financial risk industry or our SAS Risk solutions.
  • 6+ years of programming or testing experience

You are welcome here.

At SAS, it’s not about fitting into our culture – it’s about adding to it. We believe our people make the difference. Our inclusive workforce brings together unique talents and inspires teams to create amazing software that reflects the diversity of our users and customers.
