The London Major Trauma System went live in January 2011 following the formation of 4 Major Trauma Networks to serve London and the surrounding regions. As such St George's was designated as the Major Trauma Centre (MTC) for the Southwest London and Surrey Major Trauma Network. St George's MTC sees around 2500 trauma calls per annum of which around 1400 have an Injury Severity Score of over 9.

St George's Major Trauma Service is led by Trauma and Orthopaedic, with specialist support from multiple surgical and other specialities on site. In addition, our patients benefit from a well-established and expert team of Major Trauma Nurse Practitioners who co-ordinate much of the care of major trauma patients. Likewise, older patients are assessed by dedicated geriatrician service to support Major Trauma.

Applications are from invited from clinical with an interest in Major Trauma from a range of relevant clinical background, from the ED, anaesthetics and critical care and surgical specialities. Successful candidates will be allocated an educational supervisor from a relevant speciality to support their training and career progression. In addition, time will be allocated in the rota for personal development time for trainees to pursue their own clinical interests and expertise.

Main duties of the job

Successful applications will work primarily on this ward under the supervision of the Consultant of the Week for Major Trauma but will also have the unique opportunity to look after patient across their entire journey from arrival in hospital to discharge. On-calls will be spent engaged in the acute phase of patient care in the Emergency Department (ED) under the supervision of a Consultant Trauma Team Leader. The expectation is that the Clinical Fellow for Major Trauma will support the trauma team in the delivery of acute interventions, assist is in the assessment and admission of trauma patients and act as a link during the acute phase with the ED onto the wards.

St George's is both an adult and paediatric MTC and successful candidates will be trained in all aspects of major trauma management across the full age range. Successful candidates will be expected to engage with on site trauma education including attendance at one of our Trauma Team Leader Courses.

In addition to acute and ward care for major trauma patients the post-holder will be involved in various multidisciplinary team meetings relating to patient care and expected to present at these when appropriate. Audit, research and quality improvement work is encouraged as is time in theatre engaging with the operative aspects of major trauma management. Likewise, time can be allocated for the post holder to spend time understanding the perioperative care of major trauma patients, in ICU or in relevant clinics
