Job summary

Kara Healthcare is seeking a practical, reliable Maintenance Person to support our North East care homes. You will perform general repairs, respond to requests, and help keep buildings safe, clean and comfortable for residents.

We value hands-on experience in maintenance, good problem solving, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with Home Managers and care teams. A friendly, flexible approach is essential.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a maintenance, handyman, facilities, or similar role.
  • Good practical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to carry out general repairs and maintenance.
  • Understanding of health and safety principles.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out general repairs and maintenance across care homes.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and resolve issues.
  • Carry out basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, decorating tasks as capable.
  • Perform regular checks of buildings, equipment and fittings.
  • Identify issues early and report larger repairs to contractors.
  • Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of communal areas and rooms.
  • Support planned preventative maintenance and safety checks.
  • Keep accurate records of work carried out.
  • Work with contractors and suppliers when required.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Carrying out general repairs and maintenance around our care homes.
  • Responding to maintenance requests and resolving issues promptly.
  • Completing basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, decorating, and general repair work where competent.
  • Carrying out regular checks of the building, equipment, fixtures, and fittings.
  • Identifying potential maintenance issues before they become bigger problems.
  • Keeping communal areas, bedrooms, gardens, and other areas of the home well maintained.
  • Supporting the team with planned preventative maintenance.
  • Helping ensure the environment is safe, clean, comfortable, and suitable for residents.
  • Maintaining
    accurate records of maintenance work completed.
  • Reporting larger or specialist repairs when external contractors are required.
  • Working with contractors and suppliers when necessary.
  • Ensuring maintenance work is carried out safely and in line with relevant procedures.
  • Supporting health and safety checks and helping maintain compliance.
  • Responding to urgent maintenance issues when required.
  • Helping with the setup and maintenance of rooms, equipment, and facilities.
  • Working closely with Home Managers and care teams to understand and resolve maintenance needs.
What We're Looking For
  • Previous experience in a maintenance, handyman, facilities, or similar role.
  • Good practical and problem-solving skills.
  • Confidence carrying out general repairs and maintenance.
  • A good understanding of health and safety.
  • The ability to identify issues and find practical solutions.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • The ability to work independently and manage your own workload.
  • Good communication skills and a friendly approach.
  • A reliable and flexible attitude.
  • The ability to work respectfully within a care home environment.
  • Relevant maintenance, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or trade qualifications would be advantageous but are not essential.
  • Experience working in a care home, healthcare, hospitality, housing, or facilities environment would also be beneficial.
