Job summary

Imperial Recruitment Group is seeking a Maintenance Engineer for a canning site in Middlesbrough. The role covers planned & reactive maintenance on canning, bottling, and packaging equipment, with a focus on electrical/mechanical fault-finding and reliability improvements.

You will work with the Engineering team to reduce downtime, drive Root Cause Analysis, and support Lean initiatives to enhance safety, quality and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a beverage or canning environment.
  • Time-served Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in an Engineering discipline.
  • Experience in FMCG, food, beverage, or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong electrical and mechanical fault-finding skills.
  • Experience with automated production and packaging equipment.
  • Good understanding of Reliability Engineering principles, Root Cause Analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance on canning and packaging equipment, and bottling equipment when required.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults.
  • Minimise downtime through fault finding, root cause analysis, and Root Failure Analysis (RFA).
  • Support the site's Reliability Programme through proactive maintenance and equipment improvement activities.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve asset reliability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing principles to improve safety, reliability, quality, and efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records using the site's CMMS system.
  • Support equipment installations, upgrades, and engineering projects.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, Quality, and Food Safety requirements.
  • Work with Production and Operations teams to maximise equipment performance and OEE.
  • Lead by example and influence others through technical expertise and problem-solving.

Maintenance Engineer (Canning)

Salary: Up to £56,000 per annum

Location: Middlesbrough

Reporting to: - Engineering Manager

Hours: Monday - Friday (days) (flexibility may be needed)

Type: Full time / Permanent

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance on canning and packaging equipment, and bottling equipment when required.

  • Leadership, Coaching & Influence As a key member of the Engineering team, you will be expected to lead by example and positively influence others through your behaviours, technical expertise, and approach to problem-solving.
  • Share technical knowledge and engineering best practice across the team.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues to support the development of engineering capability.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Influence safe working practices and adherence to engineering standards.
  • Build strong working relationships across Engineering, Production, Quality, and Operations.
  • Challenge existing ways of working constructively to drive improvement and efficiency.
  • Support the adoption of Lean Manufacturing tools and reliability-centred maintenance practices across the site.
  • Demonstrate leadership behaviours that motivate and engage others to deliver outstanding results.
  • You will also be expected to support the site's Reliability Programme, applying structured problem-solving and Root Failure Analysis (RFA) methodologies to eliminate repeat failures, reduce downtime, and improve asset performance. An understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles will be beneficial in identifying waste, driving efficiency improvements, and delivering sustainable operational gains.
Skills & Experience
Essential
  • Experience within a beverage or canning environment.
  • Time-served Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in an Engineering discipline.
  • Experience within FMCG, food, beverage, or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong electrical and mechanical fault-finding skills.
  • Experience with automated production and packaging equipment.
  • Good understanding of Reliability Engineering principles, Root Cause Analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of PLC-controlled equipment.
  • HNC/HND in Engineering.
  • 18th Edition Electrical Qualification.
  • Experience using a CMMS.
  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing tools and techniques.
  • Experience participating in Root Failure Analysis (RFA) investigations and reliability improvement programmes.
