Job summary

Comton Group, a leading engineering and manufacturing specialist in stainless steel products, is seeking a Maintenance Lead Engineer to manage hands-on mechanical maintenance and drive reliability improvements on site.

You will lead preventative maintenance, diagnose faults, read engineering drawings and collaborate with production teams to minimise downtime and ensure safe, efficient operation.

Qualifications

  • A recognised mechanical engineering qualification, apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience.
  • Significant experience in mechanical maintenance within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Extensive experience with preventative and reactive maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, machinery and industrial equipment.
  • Experience leading maintenance teams and driving improvements.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and resolving problems.

Responsibilities

  • Leading and carrying out planned preventative and reactive mechanical maintenance.
  • Diagnosing mechanical faults and identifying root causes of equipment failures.
  • Repairing, maintaining and improving production machinery and associated equipment.
  • Taking a lead role in responding to breakdowns and minimising production downtime.
  • Supporting the installation, commissioning and modification of machinery.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to other members of the maintenance team.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve equipment reliability, efficiency and performance.
  • Maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs and equipment performance.
  • Working closely with production and engineering colleagues to resolve maintenance issues.
  • Supporting maintenance projects, upgrades and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensuring all maintenance work is completed in accordance with health, safety and environmental requirements.
  • Taking ownership of maintenance issues and seeing them through to effective resolution.

Job description

Maintenance Lead Engineer

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Maintenance Lead Engineer to join an established and highly respected engineering and manufacturing business in the West Midlands.

The company specialises in the manufacture and processing of high-quality stainless steel, duplex, super duplex and nickel alloy products, supplying customers across a range of demanding sectors including energy, offshore, nuclear, marine, automotive and construction.

As Maintenance Lead Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring production equipment and site machinery operate safely, reliably and efficiently. This is a hands-on position suited to an experienced engineer who enjoys diagnosing problems, carrying out preventative maintenance and taking the lead in improving plant reliability.

The Role

You will take a lead role in the day-to-day mechanical maintenance of a varied range of production and site equipment. Working closely with production and engineering teams, you will help minimise downtime, resolve complex maintenance issues and drive improvements across the site.

About You

We are looking for a mechanically skilled and practical engineer with strong experience working within a manufacturing, engineering or industrial environment.

You will ideally have:
  • A recognised mechanical engineering qualification, apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience.
  • Significant experience in mechanical maintenance within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Extensive experience with both preventative and reactive maintenance.
  • The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • A strong understanding of mechanical systems, machinery and industrial equipment.
  • Experience taking a lead role within a maintenance or engineering team.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and resolving problems.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • The ability to work independently and take ownership of maintenance activities.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to safe working practices.
  • Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, bearings, gearboxes, conveyors and heavy industrial machinery would be advantageous.
