Job summary

Ashtead Technology is seeking an MRT and Spooling Technician to join our workshop‑based team with offshore opportunities. You’ll perform Magnetic Rope Testing inspections and support safe deployment of our Mechanical Solutions equipment on client sites around internationally.

Primarily workshop‑based, the role offers offshore ad hoc deployments and on‑site setup, testing and reporting. You will diagnose issues, maintain equipment, and uphold safety and quality standards across projects.

Qualifications

• Experience in Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) is essential.
• Understanding of wire rope applications and integrity.
• Wire Rope Inspection Certification required.
• Recognised apprenticeship or qualification in hydraulic, electrical or mechanical discipline.
• Offshore Survival and Medical Certification is desirable.
• Good communication skills and ability to work under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Perform MRT inspections on wire ropes and document results offshore.
• Set up, install, and commission equipment on site.
• Operate and maintain LPD, cutting, pumping and winch systems safely.
• Troubleshoot hydraulic and electrical equipment from fault finding to rebuild.
• Interpret manuals and schematics to support operations and maintenance.
• Maintain safety standards and complete pre-start checks and incident reporting.
• Collaborate with clients on site and contribute to future work scopes.

Job description

As an MRT and Spooling Technician, you’ll be at the heart of our operations, carrying out specialist Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) inspections and supporting the safe, reliable deployment of our Mechanical Solutions equipment. From inspecting wire ropes to setting up and operating spooling systems on site, you’ll take on a hands‑on role where technical expertise, problem‑solving and a commitment to safety make a real difference.

Primarily workshop‑based, this role also offers the opportunity to take your expertise offshore on an ad hoc basis, supporting specialist inspections and operations at client sites around internationally.

What you’ll be doing:

• Perform Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) inspections on wire ropes.
• Prepare and complete inspection reports taking ownership of documentation offshore, completing it accurately and on time.

• Setting up, installing, and commissioning equipment on site - ensuring everything is checked, configured, and ready to perform from day one.
• Operating and maintaining a range of LPD, Cutting and Pumping equipment and winch systems safely and efficiently, with a strong focus on performance and reliability.
• Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing hydraulic and electrical equipment, from fault finding through to full strip‑down, rebuild, testing, and reporting.
• Interpreting technical manuals and schematics to support effective operation, maintenance, and modifications.
• Maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance, including correct PPE use, risk assessments, pre‑start checks, and timely incident reporting.
• Working closely with clients on site, representing the business professionally, understanding their requirements, and building strong working relationships.
• Supporting continuous improvement by identifying equipment issues, suggesting modifications, and contributing to future work scopes through detailed reporting.
  

What experience you’ll bring:

• Previous experience in Magnetic Rope Testing (essential).
• Understanding of wire rope applications.
• Wire Rope Inspection Certification.

• Recognisedapprenticeship or qualification preferably in Hydraulic, Electrical or Mechanical discipline.
• Offshore Survival and Medical Certification.
• Good communicationskills, with ability to work under pressure to meet deadlineswhether individually or as part of a team.
• Other certifications including GWO Training, Rigger Stage 1, Working at Height and Seamans Card or Book advantageous.
• Supervisory experience also beneficial.
