Job summary

CNH in Basildon is seeking a Packaging Engineering intern to support the team in developing, improving, and managing packaging solutions for production parts. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Support packaging improvement projects to reduce part damage and waste.
  • Assist design, evaluation and implementation of returnable packaging solutions.
  • Support packaging trials, validations and packaging card updates.
  • Assist with material planning to meet production volumes and demand.
  • Create and maintain SAP purchase orders and support procurement.
  • Monitor returnable packaging assets and rack/container availability.
  • Investigate packaging-related quality issues and identify root causes.
  • Collaborate with Production, Logistics, Quality, Purchasing and Engineering for CI projects.

Job description

Job Purpose

Support the Packaging Engineering team in developing, improving and managing packaging solutions for production parts. The role involves working with returnable packaging equipment such as metal stillages and racks, as well as internal protective packaging used to prevent part damage during transportation and handling. The intern will support packaging trials, material planning, packaging procurement activities, continuous improvement projects and packaging‑related quality investigations to ensure packaging availability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support packaging improvement projects aimed at reducing part damage, waste and handling activities.
  • Assist with the design, evaluation and implementation of returnable packaging solutions (metal stillages/racks) and internal protective packaging materials.
  • Support packaging trials, validations and packaging card creation or updates.
  • Assist with material planning activities to ensure packaging availability meets production volumes and customer demand.
  • Create and maintain SAP purchase orders and support packaging procurement activities.
  • Monitor returnable packaging assets and support the management of rack and container availability.
  • Investigate packaging‑related quality issues and help identify root causes and improvement opportunities.
  • Work with suppliers and internal departments including Production, Logistics, Quality, Purchasing and Engineering to support packaging activities and continuous improvement projects.
Experience Required
  • Holding a Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain or a related discipline.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel; experience with SAP and engineering drawing software (e.g. AutoCAD) would be beneficial.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively with suppliers and cross‑functional teams.
  • Interest in manufacturing, material handling, returnable packaging systems and product protection.
  • Self‑motivated with a willingness to learn in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment.
  • Understanding of Kaizen or Continuous Improvement principles would be beneficial.

The internship starts as a 1‑year fixed‑term contract with the potential to extend for a second year.
