Job summary

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) is seeking a Locum Consultant in Emergency and Upper GI Surgery for a 12-month fixed-term post based at Queens Hospital, with cross-site work to Goodmayes. The role involves managing acute and elective UGI cases, contributing to FDS and cancer services, and leading teaching and research activities.

The post requires GMC registration, MBChB, FRCS, and a CCT or near completion, with a 10–12 PA workload and on-call duties.

Qualifications

• NHS experience in general, emergency and upper GI surgery.
• Expertise in general & Upper GI surgical procedures including laparoscopy/laparotomy for acute abdomen.
• Experience in upper GI surgery and handling UGI emergencies and cancer resections.

Responsibilities

• Provide high quality Surgical/Oncological management for oesophago-gastric cancer and benign upper GI disease.
• Provide general surgery acute on-call service with weekly and weekend on-call rosters.
• Support specialist emergency upper GI services in the Trust and attend weekly MDT meetings.
• Supervise junior medical staff and participate in research and audits.
• Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and present at departmental meetings.
