The successful candidate will join a dedicated multidisciplinary team at St James University Hospital, responsible for both inpatient and outpatient services, with a strong commitment to teaching and research.

We are seeking a dynamic Locum Respiratory Consultant to join the Leeds TB & Asthma Specialist services at St James University Hospital. The appointee will become a key member of a dedicated and highly experienced multi-disciplinary team.
The job is a full-time fixed term locum post compromising of ten programmed activities, with supervision of the Resident doctors and Specialist nurses. There will be an on-call commitment to cover the Respiratory Medicine rota on a 1:12 basis and 1:109 Acute Medicine on call.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust makes up one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe housing over 2,000 beds and providing a range of general, acute and elective services, together with a significant number of regional and supra-regional specialties. The department of Respiratory Medicine has undergone significant modernisation over recent years and remains a centre for clinical and educational excellence. Inpatient services are provided in Gledhow Wing at St Jamess Hospital. This includes three Respiratory wards, an NIV / Weaning unit, a dedicated CF ward, a procedures room, Sleep services and a Nurse-led day unit. There are cross city outpatient facilities including a dedicated chest clinic at Leeds General Infirmary. The unit has a strong commitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research.
Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant should possess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Applicants should have established skills in Respiratory Medicine & General Medicine and its related specialties including TB & Asthma. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.
Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

15 whole time equivalent consultant respiratory physicians provide a cross-city inpatient and outpatient service. Current sub-specialty interests among the physicians include lung cancer, pleural disease, interstitial lung disease, difficult asthma, tuberculosis, sleep disordered breathing & non invasive ventilation, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, PCD, COPD and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency.
The Leeds TB Service
We offer an integrated service including diagnosis and treatment of active Tuberculosis and Latent Tuberculosis Infection, and screening for people who have been in contact with tuberculosis. In addition, we manage patients with pulmonary non tuberculous mycobacterial disease.
Respiratory medicine and infectious diseases consultants work together in the clinic. We aim to provide holistic care for patients and their families, with support in the clinic from the specialist TB Health Visitor team, and adult and paediatric services running together so parents, children, and other family members needing contact screening can usually be seen in the same visit. TB drugs are supplied directly within the clinic by a specialist pharmacist.
There is a weekly MDT before the clinic to discuss new and complex cases, involving respiratory and infectious disease physicians, paediatrician, microbiologist, pharmacist, and TB nurse specialists.
We provide a regional service for Multidrug resistant TB and act as a tertiary referral centre for complex mycobacterial disease.
The West Yorkshire TB Clinical Network meets twice yearly for cohort review, discussion of complex cases and issues, and TB related CPD. There is a quarterly Leeds TB group meeting to discuss and plan local TB strategy including representatives from LTHT, Leeds Community Health Care, UKHSA, and the City Council.
The Leeds Difficult asthma service
We offer an integrated difficult asthma service for the investigation and management of difficult and severe asthma. The service is supported by a MDT including specialist nurses, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy. There are also links with liaison psychiatry and immunology, and a well-developed transition service to support children and young people with severe asthma.
There is a weekly MDT, and also Leeds host the wider regional MDT to support hub and spoke model of care to deliver biological therapies across West Yorkshire.
The Leeds difficult asthma service is a founder member of the Yorkshire Asthma MDT which coordinates and delivers severe asthma services across three ICBs in Yorkshire and Humber.
