Job summary

A leading healthcare provider is seeking a Consultant Ophthalmologist to join their team in Wigan. The successful candidate will provide a Consultant Ophthalmology service, maintain responsibility for patients, and engage in teaching and supervision of junior medical staff. Required qualifications include MBBS, FRCOphth, and proven clinical experience in Ophthalmology. This role offers a full-time position with a salary range of £109,725 to £145,478 per year along with a fixed-term contract of six months.

Qualifications

Summary

The successful candidate will join our busy team providing a Consultant Ophthalmology service for inpatients, day cases and outpatients, with continuing responsibility for the patients, their care and the effective running of the department.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a Consultant Ophthalmology service for day cases and outpatients, maintaining responsibility for patients, their care, and department functioning.
  • Provide specialist lacrimal and oculoplastic expertise to serve the local population.
  • Take part in the Consultant on call rota (1:8).
  • Carry out teaching duties and actively participate in the education programme of junior medical staff, nurses and AHPs.
  • Provide supervision and training to junior hospital doctors.
  • Participate in clinical audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical governance within the department.
  • Participate in regional sub‑speciality audit and clinical governance, actively engaging in continuing professional development (CPD).
Qualifications (Essential)
  • MBBS or Basic Medical Degree.
  • FRCOphth or equivalent.
  • Full registration with GMC.
  • Glaucoma Fellowship or equivalent experience.
  • Proven clinical experience in Ophthalmology with broad specialty experience.
  • Ability to carry out high‑volume cataract surgery.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively.
  • Able to plan and develop the service.
  • Experience of working in and leading a multi‑disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
  • Computer literate.
  • Motivated and ambitious.
  • Compassionate clinician.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with clinical colleagues, laboratory staff, and other staff and agencies.
  • Experience in teaching junior medical staff.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development.
Qualifications (Desirable)
  • Specialty specific exams.
  • MD/MS.
  • Evidence of commitment to team building.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and quality issues.
  • Experience in undergraduate teaching.
  • Formal training in teaching skills.
  • Sub‑specialty training in Glaucoma.
  • Management training.
