Job summary

Essential Employment is seeking a Licensing Lawyer for a contracting role in Hackney. You will provide expert legal advice on complex licensing issues to officers, management and Licensing Committees, and attend Licensing Sub-Committee hearings for live governance guidance.

You will represent the client in Magistrates’ Court appeals and tribunals, drafting notices and licensing conditions, while tracking statutory updates affecting local authority licensing.

Qualifications

• Experience providing licensing-related legal advice to senior stakeholders.
• Knowledge of local authority licensing law and procedures.
• Ability to draft notices, decisions, and policy documents.

Responsibilities

• Provide clear, accurate and pragmatic legal advice to officers, senior management and Licensing Committees on complex and routine licensing issues.
• Prepare complex reports and attend evening Licensing Sub-Committee hearings to provide live legal, procedural and governance advice to elected Members.
• Represent the Client in Magistrates’ Court appeals, tribunals and contested licensing review hearings where required.
• Draft legal notices, committee decisions, licensing conditions and policy documents, while keeping abreast of statutory updates and legal developments affecting local authority licensing.
• Efficiently manage a high-volume, demanding caseload using our legal case management system, achieving an annual target of 1,200 chargeable hours while adhering to Lexcel standards.
• Build strong working relationships with internal teams (Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Planning), external agencies (Metropolitan Police, Fire Authority), applicants and local residents.
