Job summary

Tameside Council is seeking a Library Assistant to deliver frontline library services across eight libraries in Tameside. The role includes counter duties, stock maintenance, customer queries, and helping the public with computer learning centres.

Part-time hours apply, with Saturday 10am-3pm and Monday shifts. The post demands good customer service, clear communication in English, IT literacy (Windows and Office), and confidence handling payments by card or cheque.

Qualifications

  • You will have good customer service skills and previous experience of dealing with the public.
  • You will be a good communicator and have the ability to converse at ease with service users and provide advice in accurate spoken English.
  • You should be well organised, flexible and self-motivated and have confidence in dealing with people.
  • You must be IT literate and familiar with using Windows and Office software

Responsibilities

  • Provide frontline library services including counter duties and stock maintenance.
  • Assist members of the public in our Computer Learning Centres and reference services as needed.
  • Take payments for council services by debit/credit card or cheque.
  • Lead Time for a Rhyme session for children aged 0-4 and their families.
  • Support customers with information from library and council systems.

Contract Type: Fixed term contract (until 31st July 2027)

Salary: Grade D. Scale 7 £7,334 to Scale 10 - £7,692 (actual salary)

Hours Per Week: 10

Base Location: Any Tameside library

Assessment Date: To be arranged

The Role

Library Assistants are responsible for the provision of front line library services including counter duties, the maintenance of stock, dealing with enquiries and assisting members of the public in our Computer Learning Centres. You may also be required to assist in the provision of reference, local studies and bibliographical services.

The hours of work will be Saturdays 10am 3pm and 5 hours worked on Mondays between 8.30am 8pm and these could be worked at any of the eight libraries within Tameside.

About You

You will have good customer service skills and previous experience of dealing with the public.

You will be a good communicator and have the ability to converse at ease with service users/customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English.

You should be well organised, flexible and self-motivated and have confidence in dealing with people.

You must be I.T. literate and familiar with using Windows and Office software

You will be required to access information contained on the library and Council systems and the internet, complete service request forms on behalf of members of the public and take payment for council service by debit/credit card and cheque.

You will be confident to lead Time for a Rhyme sessions for children aged 0-4 and their families.
