Job summary

Orchard Park Community Primary School is seeking a Teaching Assistant Apprentice to support pupils in lessons and break times. You will work under a teacher's guidance to develop pupils' learning and social skills, with a focus on inclusive education and progression.

The programme runs for 1 year 2 months, starting 03 December 2026, with a 43.33-hour week and a 30-hour full-time TA schedule. The apprenticeship progresses to a Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification upon successful completion.

Qualifications

• GCSE English and Maths (grade C/4) - desired.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to manage records and support pupil progress.

Responsibilities

• Provide teaching support in small groups and, where necessary, be assigned to individual pupils to aid the teacher.
• Liaise with the teacher to understand the objectives of each session.
• Assist the teacher with observations and monitoring of the progress of children, educationally and socially.
• Keep up-to-date written records for supporting pupils.
• Promote positive behaviour patterns, raise self-esteem, and improve independent work with children.
• Work with individual pupils with special educational needs or who do not have English as their first language.
• Assist in developing individual development plans for pupils (e.g., IEPs).
• Support volunteers and other teaching assistants in the classroom.
• Support the use of ICT in the curriculum.
• Invigilate exams and tests; escort and supervise pupils on educational visits.

Job description

• Depending on school, there may be a specific focus to support teaching and learning in specific curriculum areas

Teaching Assistants may also undertake some or all of the following:

• Work with individual pupils with special educational needs
• Work with pupils for whom English is not their first language
• Assist in the development of individual development plans for pupils (such as Individual educational plans)
• Support the work of volunteers and other teaching assistants in the classroom
• Support the use of ICT in the curriculum
• Invigilate exams and tests
• Assist in escorting and supervising pupils on educational visits and out-of-school activities
• Select, prepare and clear away classroom materials and learning areas, ensuring they are available for use, including developing and presenting displays
• Support pupils in developing and implementing their own personal social and development
• Assist pupils with eating, dressing and hygiene, as required, whilst encouraging independence
• Monitor and manage stock and supplies for the classroom
