Job summary

KEYFORT Group is seeking a Learning Support Assistant for a September start in Battle Hill, Wallsend. The role focuses on dedicated one-to-one support for a young person with complex needs within an Alternative Education setting.

You will work under a Qualified Teacher and alongside other staff to implement EHCP targets. The position requires confidence, resilience and creativity, with experience in SEN or care settings.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for Learning Support Assistants to join our Alternative Education department in Battle Hill.

This is a non-traditional Learning Support Assistant role, requiring confidence, resilience, adaptability, and creativity. The successful candidate must be confident supporting young people who may display complex behaviours of concern and must be able to follow behaviour support strategies consistently.

This role is suited to someone who is passionate about supporting young people in a more personalised and individualised setting. Unlike some classroom-based support roles that involve working with multiple students across a class, this position focuses on dedicated one-to-one support within a one-to-one classroom or home tutoring environment. This allows for a more consistent and meaningful approach, where you can make a positive impact on an individual young person’s educational and social development.

You will work under the direction of a Qualified Teacher and alongside Teaching Assistants to support learning activities linked to the young person’s EHCP targets. This may include helping to create visual resources, supporting communication, and using approaches that support both verbal and non-verbal interaction.

Collaboration will be key. You will work alongside our Teachers, Teaching Assistants, SEND Lead, Coordinators, the young person’s care team, family, and external professionals, where appropriate, to ensure a holistic, person-centered approach.

Experience supporting young people with complex needs and behaviours of concern would be beneficial. Applicants who already hold an enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service would be ideal.

• Experience supporting children or young people in education, care, or SEN settings, particularly young people with autism, profound learning disabilities, or complex behaviours of concern
• Confidence supporting young people who may display challenging or complex behaviours
• A naturally positive and resilient attitude that helps create a safe, supportive, and engaging environment
• Strong understanding of safeguarding policies and practices
• Ability to follow guidance, support plans, and behaviour support strategies consistently
• Ability to adapt support for young people with SEN, with guidance from Teachers and Teaching Assistants
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Additional qualifications or training in SEN support
• Knowledge of effective behaviour support strategies
• Experience creating or using visual aids or alternative communication systems
• Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service

Role Responsibilities

• Support a young person on a one-to-one basis in their learning and daily routine, under the direction of a Qualified Teacher and with guidance from Teaching Assistants
• Deliver high-quality, safe, and person-centered support
• Support with resources and activities adapted to the individual’s EHCP goals
• Support with associated administration, setting up learning materials, and maintaining a clean and safe classroom environment
• Promote independence, communication, and social interaction in a creative and engaging way
• Work alongside families, care staff, and external professionals to ensure a joined-up approach, where appropriate
• Safeguard the young person at all times and act in their best interests
