Job Summary

To promote and develop the Neurodevelopmental Service in CAMHS by providing clinical and professional leadership in development and implementation of evidence-based practices to support people with a learning disability.

To co‑ordinate and facilitate high‑quality person‑centred specialist health care for children and young people with learning disabilities within CAMHS and the community setting.

To ensure seamless care provision between mainstream Hospital services, Primary Care services, GP surgeries and specialist learning disability services to reduce health inequalities.

Providing nursing advice, education and direct support on complex health care needs of people with a learning disability to individuals, families, staff and provider services.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for liaising with Hospital, Learning Disability Services, Schools, Children’s Service, CAMHS mental health practitioners and all other relevant carers in order to facilitate an effective health care pathway for people with a learning disability.
  • Enhance care delivery by promoting a whole system approach to achieve positive outcomes within a multi‑agency/disciplinary partnership.
  • Engage with all health care services to promote the rights of individuals with a learning disability to access an equitable service and ensure reasonable adjustments are made to meet individual needs.
  • Participate in the development and review of policies and procedures to ensure the health needs of people with a learning disability are considered and to develop processes and pathways within referrals and admissions to health care services.
  • Provide learning disability & awareness training to staff from Hospital & GP practices, acute services, other health professions, students, approved providers and third‑sector staff.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date clinical learning disability knowledge/skills as part of continual professional development, using information to affect change in practice and ensure dissemination of new knowledge while working within equality and diversity guidance to reduce discrimination and disadvantage.
  • Provide knowledge and advice to care staff on complex health needs of people with learning disabilities (e.g. dementia, epilepsy, syndrome‑specific conditions).
Qualifications
  1. 1st Level Registered Nurse (RNLD, RNMH, RNID) with Teaching/Mentorship Qualification.
  2. Professional Degree.
  3. Desirable: 2 years post‑qualifying experience including 1 year recent experience in a specialty area; relevant post‑qualifying specialty award or evidence of professional development; working towards 120 credits at Level 7.
Experience
  • Professional knowledge across a range of health‑related procedures underpinned by theory.
  • Knowledge of relevant local and national policies including Safeguarding & Disability, Capacity and Self‑Determination Law (2016) & Children and Young Peoples Law 2022.
  • Skilled practitioner in assessing health needs of individuals; proficient in clinical assessment and coordination of care packages.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of behavioural methodology (Positive Behaviour Support).
General Skills / Attributes
  • Skilled in independently coordinating clients in an agreed caseload.
  • Excellent communication and report‑writing skills; typing/IT skills.
  • Adaptable and flexible to meet changing needs.
  • Effective presentation skills; conflict resolution; communicates effectively across all levels.
