Job summary

BAM UK & Ireland is seeking an experienced Principal Design Engineer to join our Northern Regional Temporary Works Centre of Expertise. You will lead the delivery of temporary works designs across a diverse range of projects and provide technical leadership.

The role requires Chartered Engineer status, extensive temporary works experience, and the ability to mentor engineers, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, review designs, and support governance and project delivery.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional status.
• Extensive experience in temporary works and structural/civil design.
• Knowledge of construction methods and temporary works solutions.
• Proficiency in engineering analysis and design software.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and delivering complex engineering projects.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience of design assurance and technical governance.
• Knowledge of BS 5975 and temporary works management processes.
• Desirable MMC and DfMA experience; coaching/mentoring engineers.

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of temporary works design solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects.
• Provide technical leadership, supervision, and mentoring to engineers and designers.
• Act as lead contact for projects, bids, and key stakeholders.
• Review and check designs to ensure compliance with standards and best practice.
• Support technical governance, design assurance, and quality management activities.
• Undertake site visits, technical reviews and assurance activities as required.
• Support resource planning, project delivery and commercial performance.
• Drive innovation, digital engineering and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Contribute to technical training, knowledge sharing and professional development.
