Introduction

The Strategic Estates (SE) team at the House of Commons is responsible for ensuring that Parliament is a safe, efficient, and welcoming place to work and visit. This includes managing buildings and delivering capital projects across the Parliamentary Estate, which forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As part of this, the Heritage Collections Team (HCT) provides expert care and management for the UK Parliament's historic collections, including the Architectural Fabric Collection, the Historic Furniture and Decorative Arts Collection, and the Parliamentary Art Collection. This role sits within the Collections Management Team and supports our work in preserving and relocating these significant collections.

The Role

We are looking for a proactive and experienced heritage professional to lead a small team in the decant and relocation of the Parliamentary Heritage Collections to a new storage facility. Based primarily at current storage locations, the postholder will oversee the safe preparation, handling, and transportation of objects, while maintaining high standards of collections care and accurate documentation. This is a hands-on, collaborative role that requires strong planning, leadership, and technical skills.

Some of the responsibilities for this role include:

• Planning and scheduling the safe movement of heritage objects to the new storage facility.
• Managing and supporting two Storage Technicians throughout the decant project.
• Coordinating with transport providers, conservation contractors, and internal colleagues.
• Overseeing the physical loading/unloading of objects, ensuring safe practices and accurate documentation.
• Maintaining up-to-date object location records in the Collections Management System.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

• Significant experience of managing large-scale object moves within a museum, gallery, or heritage setting.
• Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and support others in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent working knowledge of collections care standards and hands-on experience handling a variety of heritage objects.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively across a range of teams and contractors.
• Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
