Job summary

Pure Resourcing Solutions is assisting a defence-focused R&D team to appoint a Lead Software & Systems Engineer in Norfolk. You will guide software and systems within R&D, introduce structured processes, and write code early while building a capable team.

You’ll shape modular architecture, verify at module level, mentor engineers, and drive a roadmap for GUI, containerisation, and secure, updatable systems. Travel may be involved.

Qualifications

• Strong C++ software engineering on Linux with optional Qt GUI experience.
• Experience implementing Git workflows, reviews, testing and releases.
• Architecture-first mindset with modular design approach.
• Background in complex products within regulated domains; defence preferred.
• Some people leadership and willingness to travel in the UK and internationally.
• Eligible for SC clearance (not required to hold it).

Responsibilities

• Own Git governance: branching, reviews, merges, releases across the department.
• Drive modular architecture with defined interfaces for reuse.
• Implement verification/validation at module level, not just system level.
• Review peers' code with authority and diplomacy.
• Lead and mentor the software/systems team and collaborate with physicists and engineers.
• Shape technical roadmap: GUI stack, containers, and secure, updatable systems.
• Hand off clean, validated work to production; maintain hands-on coding while growing the team.
