Job summary

National Grid plc in the United Kingdom is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to guide a team of engineers in designing, implementing, and maintaining secure, scalable software solutions across cloud and on‑prem environments.

Reporting to the Head of Software Engineering, you will shape platforms and tooling, drive architectural decisions, and coach engineers while maintaining high standards of security, quality, and delivery in a fast‑paced, hybrid work setting.

Qualifications

Experience designing scalable software systems.
Strong understanding of modular, secure architectures.
Proven ability to define and influence software architecture, with microservices focus.

Responsibilities

Lead and develop a high-performing software engineering team with technical direction.
Guide architectural decisions for modular, secure, maintainable solutions.
Define and enforce engineering standards, practices and quality delivery across the team.
Identify and manage technical debt, plan prevention and long-term health of platforms.
Monitor large-scale distributed systems for performance and uptime.
Build automation for configuration, provisioning and deployment.
Lead incident resolution and implement long-term fixes.
