HybridAero is an early-stage start-up comprised of aerothermal, structural and powertrain engineers, revolutionising aviation by developing software that optimises the configuration design of aircraft, enabling a step change in performance, sustainability and cost. Our software can already build and fly a wide variety of aircraft and is capable of navigating complex design spaces to find optimum configurations.

Job Description:

HybridAero are seeking a software engineer to take full ownership of the architecture of the Optimiser’s codebase. You will work alongside us (aerothermal, structural and powertrain engineers), augmenting our ability to develop the existing codebase and future modules by laying out the frameworks and patterns that we will work within. In simple terms, you will enable us to spend less time thinking about the implementation of code and more time thinking about the physics of our respective domains. Additionally, there are a broad selection of computational geometry and optimisation based problems that need solving, so there are plenty of purely technical challenges to tackle. To succeed, you will be collaborative, happy working on dynamic projects, willing to broaden your skill set and keen to work on a very wide variety of problems.

Responsibilities:

• Reviewing our current architecture and patterns, establishing standards for code organisation and patterns, refactoring where appropriate.
• Responsibility for the Optimiser’s software development lifecycle, including test coverage, development environments, release processes, CI/CD, etc.
• Developing the architecture, tool chain and process for storing and searching for results from the Optimiser and other simulations.
• Mentoring the engineers in the company to raise the coding abilities of the team - including reviewing Pull Requests and providing feedback on code quality.
• Developing pragmatic guidelines for code implementation and testing aligned with industry best practices.

Qualifications:

• Experience in a senior or staff software engineering role in which you've led the engineering practices and culture, and been responsible for a team of engineers and/or developers.
• Proven track record of developing and leading complex engineering projects.
• Our code base is currently in Python. You'll be a polyglot, with expert-level proficiency in a number of languages, and be able to demonstrate an ability to select the right language for a project
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, capable of collaborating effectively with diverse teams.
• Strong self-motivation, preferred experience with hybrid or fully remote working.
• Preference for a working knowledge of optimisation.
• Preference for a working knowledge of parallelisation (including shared-memory multi-processing, SMP).
• Preference for a working knowledge of building / maintaining / using large databases.
• Preference for a working knowledge of computational geometry.
• Preference for a working knowledge of web application development.
• 9 day working fortnight (compressed 80 hours and every other Friday off)
• 4% pension contributions rising by 1% per year of service to a maximum of 10%
