Job summary

A leading UK port and logistics operation near Barton-upon-Humber is seeking a skilled Lead Mechanical Fitter. The successful candidate will oversee safe maintenance of bulk handling equipment and provide technical leadership to the mechanical team.

The role involves hands-on work on conveyors, bucket elevators, hoppers, silos, dust extraction systems, cranes and related plant. Requires Level 3 NVQ/City & Guilds in Mechanical Eng, 5+ years post-apprenticeship experience, and a driving licence.

Qualifications

• Level 3 NVQ or City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering required.
• At least 5 years post-apprenticeship Mechanical Maintenance experience.
• Experience in heavy industrial environments (ports, mining, steelworks, oil & gas).
• Experience working on conveyors, bulk handling systems and materials handling equipment.
• Must be comfortable working at height and in confined spaces; driving licence required.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support the mechanical maintenance team.
• Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs.
• Diagnose and resolve mechanical faults quickly and effectively.
• Work on conveyors, bucket elevators, hoppers, silos and dust collection systems.
• Maintain gearboxes, motors, bearings, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
• Carry out alignment work using laser alignment and dial test indicators.
• Support root cause analysis and continuous improvement projects.
• Ensure all work is safe and in line with procedures.
• Liaise with operations, electrical and health & safety teams.
• Provide occasional out-of-hours and weekend support.

The Role of the Lead Mechanical Fitter

As Lead Mechanical Fitter, you will be responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient maintenance of bulk handling equipment across the terminal. The Lead Mechanical Fitter will provide day to day technical leadership to the mechanical team and support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance plant reliability and performance.

This is a hands on role working on a wide range of heavy industrial equipment, including conveyors, bucket elevators, hoppers, silos, dust extraction systems, cranes, and associated mechanical plant.

Requirements of the Lead Mechanical Fitter

• Level 3 NVQ or City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering
• At least 5 years of post Apprenticeship Mechanical Maintenance experience
• Experience working in heavy industrial environments such as ports, quarrying, mining, steelworks, power generation, or oil and gas
• Experience working on conveyors, bulk handling systems, and materials handling equipment
• Good knowledge of hydraulics and pneumaticsExperience with gearboxes, motors, bearings, cranes, rigging, and slinging
• Comfortable working at height and in confined spaces
• Supervisory or team leadership experience
• Must be flexible to work occasional weekends in line with operational requirements
• Full UK driving license
