Brief
We are seeking a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer for a well-known Facilities Management organisation based in London. The role involves working one day a week in London and requires an experienced, well-rounded engineer with in-depth knowledge of design, development, and optimisation of mechanical systems in decarbonisation and energy efficiency projects, mainly sustainable retrofits. The role covers RIBA Stages 2-7, managing mechanical and energy systems design, including heat pumps, HVAC, and intermediate to complex ECMs (Energy Conservation Measures).
The ideal candidate will have a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (MEng/BEng or equivalent) and previous management experience supporting a team.

Key Responsibilities:
Mechanical Design & Engineering
- Lead mechanical design across RIBA Stages 2-4, providing technical support through to stages 5-7, ensuring technical excellence and commercial viability.
- Design and implement low-carbon energy solutions, including heat pumps, district heating, HVAC, and energy-efficient BMS.
- Develop modelling tools to analyse and improve mechanical system performance.
- Ensure compliance with CIBSE, PAS 2035, MCS, and UK building regulations.
- Lead BIM implementation within mechanical designs, ensuring standards and integration.
- Oversee CAD model development and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
Design Management & Team Development
- Coordinate and manage mechanical, electrical, and energy systems design for projects.
- Support tendering and project teams with technical reviews.
- Mentor and develop a team of design engineers, fostering expertise and improvement.
- Facilitate collaborative workshops to promote interdisciplinary coordination.
- Ensure design practices align with sustainability, compliance, and operational goals.
Project Delivery & Risk Management
- Manage project designs from inception to completion, ensuring timely and within-budget delivery.
- Conduct risk assessments and design reviews to meet safety and regulatory standards.
- Support procurement and supplier negotiations for optimal system selection and cost management.
- Assist clients with planning applications, heritage constraints, and technical due diligence.
Technical Leadership & Retrofit Strategy
- Engage stakeholders, presenting technical concepts clearly and strategically.
- Lead retrofit design processes, ensuring alignment with decarbonisation goals and funding requirements.
- Oversee complex ECMs, ensuring integration, efficiency, and compliance.
- Develop measurement & verification (M&V) strategies following IPMVP where applicable.
Decarbonisation Strategy & Consultancy
- Lead decarbonisation project planning for public and private sector clients, including local authorities, social housing, healthcare, and commercial sectors.
- Conduct technical and financial assessments of low-carbon technologies like heat pumps, district energy, HVAC, BMS, and solar PV.
- Guide clients through funding applications (e.g., PSDS, Warmer Homes, GHNF, HNES), ensuring compliance and success.
Candidate Requirements:
- Proven experience in leading mechanical design and decarbonisation projects.
- Extensive knowledge of building energy systems, heat networks, and low-carbon infrastructure.
- Expertise in HVAC design, risk assessment, and project delivery.
- Experience with energy modelling software such as IES, Energy Pro, PVsol, Termis, NEMO, Netsim, and Bluebeam.
- Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (MEng/BEng or equivalent).
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) with CIBSE or IMechE preferred.
- Significant experience in mechanical design, retrofit, and decarbonisation projects.
- Retrofit Designer Certification is highly desirable.
