Job summary

GHD is seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to lead complex projects across water, transportation, energy, and environmental sectors from London. You will provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and help grow our geotechnical capability in the UK.

You will manage projects from feasibility through detailed design, engage clients and regulators, and drive innovation in geotechnical engineering and digital delivery.

Qualifications

• Degree in Geotechnical/Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• CEng or CGeol status, or near chartership.
• 10+ years of relevant industry experience in consultancy, contracting, or client environments.
• Strong expertise in ground investigation, geotechnical analysis, and foundation engineering.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary infrastructure projects from feasibility to construction.
• Ability to manage project budgets, commercial performance, and client relationships.
• Strong report writing, technical review, and presentation skills.
• Proven mentoring and development of engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead planning, management, and delivery of complex geotechnical investigations, assessments, and design projects.
• Provide technical oversight and QA for geotechnical analysis, foundation design, earthworks, slopes, retaining structures and ground improvements.
• Act as a technical reviewer across multidisciplinary projects.
• Drive innovation and continuous improvement in geotechnical practices and digital delivery.
• Lead project teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions safely, on time, and within budget.
• Manage programmes, resources, risks, and financial performance.
• Support proposals, fee estimates, and tender submissions.
• Develop client relationships and engage stakeholders including regulators and contractors.
