Job summary

Motorway, the UK’s leading car marketplace platform, is seeking a Lead GenAI Engineer to define and raise the bar for GenAI across the data and AI function. You will own architecture, set standards, and directly build the hardest features while mentoring senior engineers.

Reporting to the GenAI Engineering Manager, you will partner with principal engineers, data leaders, and product leadership to ensure scalable, cost-effective AI solutions that improve buyer/seller experiences.

Qualifications

• Experience setting technical direction that teams actually adopt.
• Strong Python and SQL skills used daily for data-centric work.
• Deep GenAI stack knowledge: retrieval, vector stores, evaluation infra, fine-tuning where appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Set architecture standards for complex GenAI work across the function.
• Sign-off on complex AI systems, with focus on risk, safety and reliability.
• Own foundations that determine feature quality: retrieval patterns, evaluation infra, data pipelines.
• Build the hardest parts directly and mentor senior engineers.
• Design systems for production-ready reliability, cost control, and latency at scale.
• Develop engineers around you by giving tough problems and feedback.
