Job summary

Motorway, the UK's largest online car-selling platform, is seeking a Lead GenAI Engineer to set the technical standard for GenAI work. You will own architecture and sign-off on high-stakes AI systems, collaborating with leaders across Data & AI and product.

You will mentor senior engineers, shape hiring and reviews, and drive practical, scalable GenAI features for buyers and dealers in a fast-growing scale-up.

Qualifications

• You have set technical direction that other teams adopted.
• Strong Python and SQL you genuinely use.
• Deep, current GenAI stack expertise including retrieval at scale.
• You know MLOps tooling, deployment and cloud infra (AWS/GCP).
• You design production-ready systems that survive real use.
• You have a strong point of view on evaluation and risk.
• Your contributions raise the quality bar for those around you.
• You explain hard trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders clearly.
• You know when to bring in external expertise.

Responsibilities

• Set the architecture standard for complex GenAI work across the function.
• Sign-off on materially complex AI systems to catch issues early.
• Own foundations: retrieval patterns, evaluation infra, data pipelines.
• Build the hardest pieces directly as a senior engineer.
• Design for scalable, affordable production with graceful degradation.
• Develop senior engineers by giving them bigger problems and feedback.
• Shape hiring and review processes with a clear quality bar.
• Bring actionable industry insight into planning and architecture.
