Job summary

Motorway is seeking a Lead GenAI Engineer to set the technical standard for AI work across the GenAI Engineering function. You will build the hardest parts yourself, own the architecture, and guide senior engineers to improve the team's craft.

You’ll oversee systems that balance cost, latency and reliability while ensuring safe, scalable AI features for buyers and dealers in our UK marketplace. This is a hands-on, player-coach role based in London with a hybrid work model.

Qualifications

• Strong Python and SQL usage in production environments.
• Deep expertise across GenAI stack: retrieval, vector stores, orchestration, multimodal work, evaluation infra, fine-tuning.
• Fluency with MLOps tooling, deployment, and cloud infra (AWS/GCP).
• Ability to design production-ready systems and explain trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Set architecture standards for complex GenAI work across the function.
• Sign-off on complex AI systems to ensure safety, reliability, and cost control.
• Own shared foundations: retrieval patterns, evaluation infrastructure, data pipelines, tooling.
• Build the hardest pieces of work directly and mentor senior engineers.
• Design for production-grade resilience, graceful degradation, and scalable costs.
• Develop senior engineers by granting ownership and giving feedback.
• Shape hiring and review processes with clear quality criteria.
• Provide actionable industry insights into planning and architecture.
