Job summary

J. Murphy & Sons Ltd invites applications for a Design Manager in the Ground Engineering Division in London, with flexibility to base at any Murphy location across the UK. The role will span design leadership, BIM-enabled projects, and client engagement on geotechnical schemes.

You will lead geotechnical design, supervise junior staff, coordinate with stakeholders, and support commercial activities. Applicants should hold a Masters in civil/geotechnical engineering, be Chartered (ICE), and have

Qualifications

Masters-level degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Engineering Geology.
Chartered status with a relevant professional body (e.g., ICE).
Experience developing innovative geotechnical engineering solutions to current design standards.
Experience in pile testing and interpretation.
Capability with foundation, slope, and retaining wall design software; numerical modelling software experience and coding capability an advantage.
Experience implementing or constructing design solutions on construction sites.
Experience managing and liaising with third parties and contractors.
Effective communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills; ability to collaborate with all staff levels and clients and nurture junior staff.
Ability and enthusiasm for supervising the work of others, including checking and approving key deliverables.
Project management skills and demonstrable technical leadership and collaborative capabilities.

Responsibilities

Develop design solutions and associated deliverables, drawing on a range of geotechnical skills.
Bear, tension, anchor, and minipile design.
Retaining wall design, including secant, contiguous, and sheet pile design.
Secant shaft design.
Geotechnical risk management through desk studies, site investigation, geotechnical data management, and ground modelling.
Supervise the work of junior staff and provide technical and professional guidance for their development.
Deliver packages of design work, collaborating with external and internal stakeholders, ensuring quality control, and managing inputs from other team members.
Support project commercial management and proposal delivery.
Provide technical input and support for commercial communications (SNCs, NCRs, CEs, departures, etc.).
Coordinate with construction teams for management of geotechnical related issues.
Ensure timely closure of geotechnical issues within the area of responsibility.
Review monitoring reports and certificates; support progressive technical assurance during design, construction, and handover.
