The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across this region.

Our Structures Team at Amey Consulting is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Scotland, with cumulative values exceeding £1bn.

Amey manages the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively, with durations of 8 years, extendable up to 12. years. We also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and contractors nationwide.

These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages, involved in some of Scotland’s most exciting engineering projects.

The role

Our Lead Bridge Engineers are integral to the Design team and work alongside Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader on civil schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, adhering to standards and client requirements
  • Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria
  • Overseeing junior staff and ensuring quality of their work
  • Managing project budgets and costs for successful delivery
  • Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries
  • Contributing to bids and work-winning activities
  • Promoting health and safety practices within the team

What you will bring to us:

  • Experience and expertise in civil engineering, likely in a Senior Engineer role or similar
  • Ability to produce and check high-quality engineering solutions independently
  • Experience in health, safety, and welfare management, including relevant regulations
  • Ability to act as the main engineering contact on projects, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes
  • Knowledge of design and specification processes, capable of advising and checking designs
  • Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools
  • Understanding of CDM and risk management, capable of acting as Principal Designer
  • People management skills, capable of leading a medium-sized technical team
  • Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent is desirable and may be essential depending on contracts
