Our people are driven by strong values based on safety, insight, and collaboration.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across this region.

Our Structures Team is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Scotland, with values exceeding £1bn.

Amey manages the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively, with durations of 8 years, extendable to 12. We also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and contractors nationwide.

These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages.

The role

Our Lead Bridge Engineers are key members of the Design team, working alongside Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader on various Civil schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with standards and client requirements.
  • Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
  • Overseeing junior staff's work and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Managing project budgets and controlling costs.
  • Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Contributing to bids and work-winning activities.
  • Promoting health and safety within the team.

What you will bring to us:

  • Experience and expertise in the relevant technical field, likely from a Senior Engineer role or similar.
  • Ability to produce compliant, high-quality engineering solutions independently and supervise others.
  • Experience with health, safety, and welfare management, including regulations and systems.
  • Capability to act as main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes.
  • Knowledge of design and specification processes, with the ability to review designs to a high standard.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools.
  • Understanding of CDM and risk management, with experience in hazard and risk communication.
  • Ability to act as Principal Designer on appropriate projects.
  • People management skills, capable of managing a medium-sized technical team.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent is desirable and may be essential for certain contracts.
