Job summary

Substrate Bio in London is seeking a Lab Operations lead to run the day-to-day lab floor. You will manage consumables, stock, goods-in, cold chain, equipment calibration, and purchasing, ensuring traceability and compliance.

You will design barcode-enabled workflows with the science and software teams, shaping how samples are stored, scanned, and recorded from receipt to bench to stock draw-down. This on-site role is integral to enabling rapid biology work and provenance.

Qualifications

• Two or more years running a lab or comparable physical operation.
• Practical stock control: goods in, inventory records, reorder points, stock counts that reconcile.
• Buying from suppliers: raising orders, comparing quotes, managing lead times.
• Hands on with a barcoded or scanned stock system, including what goes wrong when people skip the scan.
• Lab environment experience: cold storage, hazardous waste, containment, controlled materials.

Responsibilities

• Run day-to-day lab operations, ensuring consumables, stock, goods-in and cold chain are in order.
• Oversee equipment servicing and calibration, supplier management and purchasing.
• Maintain waste streams and safety records in line with regulatory standards.
• Collaborate with science and software teams to define barcode and inventory requirements.
• Implement barcode-driven workflows to improve provenance and stock control.
