Job summary

Substrate Bio Ltd in London is building an AI-native automated lab infrastructure. You will join a small elite team coding the software that turns scientific intent into executed experiments, with full provenance and data-graph integration.

You will own core data ingestion, orchestration, APIs, and the platform beneath it all, shipping production code from day one. A highly collaborative, hybrid-working environment supports scientists and software engineers alike.

Qualifications

• You are a generalist who has shipped production systems that other people depend on.
• You write good code at speed, you have opinions about architecture, and you have learned when to hold them and when to defer.
• Engineering discipline: CI/CD and automated testing are how you work, not add-ons later.
• End-to-end ownership: architecture, reliability, observability, the on-call pager.

Responsibilities

• Build the infrastructure software that runs the lab, working across the stack with the founding software engineer and the team.
• Own data ingestion and ontology underpinning our data and workflows.
• Develop APIs that receive customer intent, translate into workflows, and return results.
• Design the orchestrator and the resource model tracking consumables and instruments.
• Create the capture pipeline that structures data with audit logging on every action.
