Job summary

Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a permanent Medical Laboratory Assistant for Weston General Hospital. The MLA will support the diagnostic Blood Sciences service, working as part of a team with Biomedical Scientists, clerical and medical staff.

The post involves assisting with sample workflows, maintaining new instrumentation and contributing to out-of-hours service via a rota. The role covers routine tasks in Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Clinical Biochemistry, with focus on data

Qualifications

• Experience in a clinical laboratory environment is preferred.
• Ability to handle samples and maintain workflow across pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical stages.
• Commitment to safety regulations and mandatory training.

Responsibilities

• Support implementation of new automated instrumentation as directed by Biomedical Scientists.
• Enable smooth workflow of samples between pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes with automated analysers and storage equipment.
• Collect, sort, prioritise and process samples in a busy environment while maintaining good working relationships.
• File samples after analysis into appropriate storage systems.
• Retrieve consumables and reagents from stores and alert when stock is low.
• Use laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
• Enter data daily using word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
• Use email to send authorised documents within Blood Sciences.
• Observe safety regulations and complete mandatory training.
• Undertake training to improve performance within the Department.
