Job summary

Substrate is seeking a hands-on Lab Operations Lead to run the day-to-day in our London lab. You will manage consumables, stock, cold chain, equipment servicing and calibration, plus sourcing from suppliers and ensuring safety records.

Three focus areas set this role apart: provenance of every experiment, defining lab capture needs with software and science teams, and automating sample handling with barcode workflows.

Qualifications

• Two or more years running a lab or comparable physical operation, hands-on and accountable for the result.
• Practical stock control: goods in, inventory records, reorder points, stock counts that reconcile.
• Buying from suppliers: raising orders, comparing quotes, managing lead times.
• Hands-on with a barcoded or scanned stock system, including what goes wrong when people skip the scan.
• Lab environment experience: cold storage, hazardous waste, containment, controlled materials.

Responsibilities

• Run the day-to-day operations of the London lab, the go-to person when something is missing, broken, late or lost.
• Manage consumables and stock, goods in and cold chain, equipment servicing and calibration, suppliers and purchasing, waste streams and safety records.
