Job summary

Specialist SEND Group is seeking a patient and engaging SEND Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support to a KS1 pupil at a mainstream primary school in Handforth. You will help him access learning, understand his non-verbal communication, and build a trusting relationship.

Work with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team to maintain routines, support emotional regulation, and create a safe, inclusive environment where he can participate and grow.

Qualifications

• Have previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND.
• Have experience supporting non-verbal or minimally verbal children.
• Hold, or are willing to obtain, an enhanced DBS and complete safeguarding checks.

Responsibilities

• Provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school morning.
• Support him to engage with classroom activities and access the curriculum.
• Help him remain focused and gently redirect him when he becomes distracted.
• Use appropriate visual, practical and communication strategies to support his understanding.
• Recognise and respond to his non-verbal communication, behaviours and cues.
• Support with emotional and behavioural regulation when required.
• Encourage independence, confidence and participation within the classroom.
• Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team.
• Maintain clear boundaries while providing patient, nurturing and consistent support.
• Help create an environment where he feels safe, understood and included.
