Job description

Applicationsare invited for Junior Clinical Fellow (JCF) positions within the Specialtyand Integrated Medicine Care Clinical Service Unit at St Jamess UniversityHospital, Leeds. They are ideally suited to post-Foundation Year 2 juniordoctors who have yet to decide their chosen career pathway or who are not yetready to enter a formal training scheme.

OurJCF posts, which are fixed-term for 12-months from 6th August 2025, aredesigned to provide excellent clinical training in Acute, General, andElderly Medicine.

Successfulapplicants will be given an opportunity to work within our Same Day EmergencyCare (SDEC) service, on our Acute Medical Units, on our in-patient SpecialtyWards, and in our Centre for Reconditioning.

Inaddition, the postholder will be asked to contribute to our exciting Researchand Innovation (R&I) programme, and will be supported to develop aspecialist interest in one (or more) of the following areas:

(a) Medical management

(b) Quality improvement

(c) Teaching and education

(d) Simulation

EachJCF will be allocated a named Educational Supervisor with whom they willdevelop a tailored training and R&I plan. This will involve ring-fencedtime to pursue their non-clinical interest.

Main duties of the job

Postholderswill contribute to all aspects of the Specialty and Integrated Medicineservice. We expect a particular focus on:

Good clinical care;

Maintaining good medical practice;

Good relationships and communicationwith patients;

Good working relationships withcolleagues;

Good teaching and training;

Professional behaviour and probity.

Theideal applicants for these positions will therefore be able to demonstrateexcellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills. They will be ableto work cooperatively with colleagues across our multidisciplinary teams,managing their time effectively. The successful applicant will be committed toproviding expert medical care, including discharge planning, in patientspresenting with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.

Inaddition to specialist interest time, opportunities will be provided foreducation and continuing professional development each week.

Post-holderswill be asked to contribute to an out-of-hours rota providing cover for SDECand medical admissions.

Job responsibilities

Although post-holders will undertake most oftheir clinical duties within their chosen parent specialty, they may be askedto contribute to the care of patients in all of these areas from time-to-time.

Ourdepartment at SJUH is currently based across Chancellors Wing and GledhowWing. It comprises four Acute Medical Units (one of which incorporates a HighObservation Unit (HOBS)), a Same Day Emergency Care service (with both aMedical Unit and Older Persons Unit), two General Medicine / Diabetes &Endocrinology wards, five Elderly Medicine wards, and an Infectious Diseases& Travel Medicine Unit.

Excellentexperience will be provided in ambulatory care, the management of acutely illpatients, on-going in-patient care, rehabilitation, and discharge planning.Furthermore, we have very good links with Leeds Community Healthcare NHSTrust, especially with the Community Care Beds, and run a large number ofspecialist out-patient clinics.

KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

DUTIESOF THE POST

To ensure high quality and safe careof patients within the department resulting in excellent clinical outcomes.

To contribute directly to patientcare by, for example, reviewing patients, organising investigations andacting on results, initiating and changing treatment, and speaking topatients and their relatives/carers about their illness and clinicalprogress.

To undertake essential administrativeduties, including prescribing, writing electronic discharge letters, andliaising with colleagues in primary care.

To contribute to a multidisciplinaryapproach to patient care, working collaboratively with a large team of alliedhealthcare professionals, including the Early Discharge Assessment Team,specialist nurses and physiotherapists.

You will be provided with ring-fencedtime to pursue a specialist interest in medical management, qualityimprovement, teaching and education, or simulation.

LEVELSOF RESPONSIBILITY

Thepostholder will be expected to work at the level of a post-Foundation Year 2trainee doctor (ST1 to ST2 equivalent). They will have access to supervisionand support from a Registrar and Consultant at all times.

TEACHINGAND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING

Protected non-clinical time will beprovided.

There will be opportunity forundergraduate teaching.

Study leave is available, at thediscretion of Educational Supervisors, for courses/training related to Acute,General and Elderly Medicine, or Infectious.

Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems.

  • Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient.
  • Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues.

Clinical Experience and Career Progression
  • At least 6-months' experience working within the NHS in Acute, General or Elderly Medicine, or Infectious Diseases. Completion of Foundation Year 2 competencies or equivalent
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date. Be eligible to work in the UK
  • Have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
Qualifications
  • Holds an MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Holds the MRCP(UK) diploma.
