- £375 / day (Inside IR35)
- 6 months (initial)
- Hybrid (3 days on-site per week in Manchester, Leeds, or Newcastle)
We are seeking an experienced Interaction Designer to join an agile, multidisciplinary team designing accessible, user-focused public services. You will turn complex policy, user journeys, and systemic challenges into clear, intuitive digital and assisted-digital experiences that meet Government Design Principles and GDS / CDDO Service Standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Prototyping and Iteration: Design, build, and iterate rapid interactive prototypes (from sketch to coded prototypes using the GOV.UK Prototype Kit) to test hypotheses and communicate solutions.
- Service Architecture and Flow: Map end-to-end user journeys, task models, wireframes, and interface designs across both digital and non-digital touchpoints.
- User-Centred Design: Work in lockstep with User Researchers to observe usability testing, synthesize research findings, and make evidence-based design iterations.
- Design Systems and Accessibility: Implement and contribute to the GOV.UK Design System, ensuring all interactions comply with WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards.
- Facilitation and Alignment: Lead co-design workshops, design crits, and cross-functional design sessions to align product managers, developers, and policy stakeholders around user needs.
Essential
- Proven experience delivering user-centred interaction design within agile, multidisciplinary product teams.
- Hands-on proficiency with design and prototyping tools (Figma, Sketch) and rapid prototyping workflows.
- Strong commitment to accessibility, inclusivity, and assisted-digital user needs.
- Solid grasp of core interaction fundamentals: layout, typography, micro-copy, and systemic consistency.
- Ability to articulate design decisions clearly and influence non-design stakeholders with evidence-based rationale.
- Experience facilitating workshops and design-thinking sessions with cross-functional teams.
Desirable
- Experience working within the UK public sector and familiarity with the GDS Service Standard and GOV.UK Design System.
- Ability to prototype directly in code using HTML/CSS/JavaScript or the GOV.UK Prototype Kit.
- Understanding of technical constraints, API boundaries, and basic data models to ensure feasible designs.
