Job summary

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking a compassionate Phlebotomist to join our Phlebotomy Service covering inpatient wards across Clyde Sector. You will perform venepuncture, label samples, and ensure prompt delivery to laboratories, contributing to timely patient care at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and related sites.

The post requires excellent timekeeping, teamwork, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a busy hospital environment.

Qualifications

• Educated to Standard Grade level or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to reassure and support patients from a range of backgrounds.
• Strong team working skills and the ability to build positive relationships with clinical and non‑clinical staff.
• Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet service deadlines.
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail when identifying patients and handling samples.
• Reliable, self‑motivated and able to work independently when required.
• Ability to work in a busy healthcare environment while maintaining professionalism and patient‑focused care.

Responsibilities

• Collect blood samples from patients using venepuncture techniques in line with clinical requests.
• Accurately identify patients and ensure all samples and documentation are correctly labelled.
• Support the safe and timely delivery of blood specimens to laboratories to meet service requirements.
• Work closely with clinical colleagues, ward staff and phlebotomy team leaders to deliver an effective service.
• Adhere to infection prevention, health and safety, incident reporting and patient confidentiality policies.
• Monitor and maintain stock levels of essential phlebotomy supplies and equipment.
• Provide flexible support and cover for colleagues during periods of annual leave or absence.
